Possibles Bag – Pioneer Bag [SL-3100]

$98.00

“Possibles” bags first gained their name and popularity amongst the mountain men, pioneers, and frontiersman of the American Old West. A possibles bag was a bag or container in which one carried all items — other than shooting supplies — that were necessary for survival and/or needed to be close at hand. Possibles bags remain in use today by naturalists, hikers, hunters, and others (though are sometimes known by a different name).

In the 18th and 19th centuries, mountain men, minutemen, frontiersmen, and black powder hunters of all kinds would usually be found with two bags slung across their shoulders: their powder horn and their “possibles bag.” It was so-named either because it contained everything you might possibly need for the day, or because you could possibly find most anything packed in the bag. As with the ditty bag, the contents of a man’s possibles bag varied by taste and necessity.

Description

Most typically, the frontiersman’s possibles bag was stocked with all kinds of essentials for hunting, fighting, and venturing through the great outdoors: tobacco and pipe, tin cup, flints, jerky and other edibles, nipple wrenches and picks (tools for one’s muzzleloader), etc. Within the possibles bag might also be a “strike-a-light” pouch, which held a fire striker and tinder. The bags were made of animal skin, and either slung over the shoulder or attached to a belt.

As I said before, to 21st century eyes, it may look out of place but a hunting bag’s functionality for then is more in step with what a modern-day courier bag does now. It carries the basics of what would be needed for life in the primitive world. They are typically of a cloth or skin construction. In addition to ammunition, there will be basic tools for your long rifle or fowler; also included is a means to make fire or knap flint; a kit to repair your clothing and gear; tools to navigate the unfamiliar trail; various simple remedies for injury or illness and even a cutting tool to help you make more useful implements.

*PLEASE READ: Because leather is a natural product there can be natural “imperfections” in each piece such as marks, lines, scratches, holes, different fiber thicknesses and darker spots. These “blemishes” add to the character and handmade quality of each piece. Real leather is an amazing natural product that breathes. It is both flexible, strong and durable, and when products made from leather are properly cared for, they should last for a long time.
